George Douglas Campbell is shown in three-quarter-length, standing in an interior, with his hands clasped behind the back. He wears Highland dress with a kilt of Campbell of Argyll tartan and the ribbon and star of the Order of the Thistle. The silver buttons on his jacket are made in the shape of salmon, in allusion to the royal sacred salmon of the Kings of Ireland. This is a copy by Koberwein-Terrell, painted for Queen Victoria, of the portrait which was painted by Von Angeli in 1876 and still hangs at Inverary Castle.
