MAJ Walter Jean Campbell, US Army Ret.

CCSNA Past Vice President, Past CCSNA Trustee, Past CCSNA Membership Chairman, Past North Carolina Commissioner, CCSNA Past North Carolina Games Commissioner, Clansman of the Year Award 1991, Presidents Award 2005, CCEF Director, Major, US Army Ret.

Walter joined the Society in 1975. He became the North Carolina Games Commissioner in 1984, North Carolina State commissioner in 1990, remained at that position until April 1996 when he was appointed to Membership Chair. In 1998 he was elected to the Board of Trustees and in 2002 Walter was elected Vice President,

In 1991 he was presented the Clan Campbell Society Clansman of the Year Award and the Presidents Award in 2005.

Walter has a ready sense of humor and was a great communicator both written and spoken. Walter set the standard for the Membership Chairman, which has never been equaled. He personally contacted every single new member in the Society and welcomed them into the Clan Campbell Society and explained the benefits and traditions of the the Clan Campbell. As Vice President he trained and keep every Commissioner informed and updated on all the latest information and best practices for a properly run and maintained Games Tent. Every Commissioner heard from Walter on a regular basis.

"MAJ Walter Jean Campbell Clansman of the Year Award 1991

The Clansman of the Year award is given to those whom a majority of the current holders of the award believe contributed the most to the work of the society in the previous 12 months.

This year the recipient was present at the annual general meeting of the clan Campbell society USA to receive the award. He was MAJ Walter J. Campbell of Lafayette, North Carolina, the place which was formally named Campbelltown.

Walter has been the Commissioner for North Carolina for a number of years and has faithfully and industriously promoted the Society at all the Games he could reach. His smart appearance, resulting from years of training army cadets, creates a spruce and engaging image which well expresses his warm and efficient style of working to make the Society known to all Campbells he meets." Journal of the Clan Campbell Society (North America) 1991, vol. 18, no.4.

Walter completed the requirements for a Masters of Arts degree in Education May 1983, and completed all requirements for, and was certified as, a Principal, school grades K - 12 (kindergarten through grade 12) in North Carolina in 1985.

Walter joined the Army in 1949 and served until 1952. He reentered the army in 1956 and retired in 1974. He served in Korea, Vietnam (two tours), and Germany. Walter has 23 decorations and awards including the Soldier's Medal, Combat Infantry Badge (2nd Awd), and the Bronze Star x/1OLC. He was an active member of the US Army Special Forces Association. His also member of the National Eagle Scout Association, Boy Scouts of America. Walter was fond of saying, "He was a Corporeal three times before he figured when and how to keep his mouth shut!" He worked his way up through the ranks to MAJ.

Walter met his wife Carolyn Jo (Jody) while both were attending the University of Oklahoma. Walter and Jody have four children and six grandchildren now in various resume parts of the continent. The oldest daughter Deborah, a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Nurse Corps holds a BS and Masters in Nursing. The second daughter, Jeana, is an office manager in Raleigh NC. Eldest son Walter Joe, who has a BA from Campbell University, NC, and a Masters from NC State, is an executive with Hewlett-Packard in San Jose California. Son Mark who has a BS in Geology from Appalachian State University in Boone NC is a project supervisor with Yadkin Valley Telephone Company in Booneville, NC.

Walter's hobbies are stamp collecting commemorative US mint sheets fishing and playing his with his computer. He and his wife were also volunteers with the local Red Cross. Walter will continue to hold the appointment of membership chair for the society.

Walter's time "out of country" lead to his health issues that prevented him from becoming what we all know would have been an EXCELLENT President for the Clan Campbell Society (North America). His service, devotion, and kinship are missed to this day.

Tribute:

Major Campbell had a huge influence on my life.  I was born and raised in Lumberton, NC and took JROTC under Major Campbell's tutelage.  When I graduated from UNC-P, Major Campbell read my oath of office at my Air Force commissioning ceremony.  I went on to fly airplanes in the AF and will retire this year after almost 22 years of service.  I thought of him often through the years.  He will truly be missed. - Lt Col Roy Bacot, Jan 11, 2015

Tribute:
Major Campbell was my JROTC instructor at Lumberton high school 1983-1986. He made a positive impact on the lives of countless students, teaching them personal responsibility and leadership skills. - Daniel C. Gillis, Feb 05, 2014
