Methodology & Technology

To ensure absolute data integrity, our verification process relies on querying global WHOIS database protocols.

Managed under strict guidelines set by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a WHOIS utility functions as the authoritative "white pages" for the internet. It allows researchers to look up critical technical metadata for internet resources, including:

• Registrant Authenticity: Verifying the legal entity or non-profit holding the domain.
• Lifecycle Metrics: Documenting creation dates, renewal cycles, and domain stability.
• Technical Routing: Identifying authoritative Name Servers and accredited registrars.

1. Inclusion Criteria

To maintain the integrity of the Verified Registry, organizations must meet specific criteria to be indexed. The project evaluates entities based on the following benchmarks:

• Organizational Legitimacy: The entity must be a recognized Clan Society, Family Association, or regional chapter with an active governing body or charter.
• Domain Authenticity: The primary domain must be registered to the organization itself or an authorized officer, minimizing the risk of "domain squatting" or unofficial representation.
• Content Alignment: The web property must actively serve the preservation of Scottish heritage, genealogy, or clan history.

2. Data Governance & Privacy Statement

While the WHOIS protocol utilizes public directory data, this project respects modern privacy standards (including GDPR and CCPA) regarding personal data redaction:

• Public vs. Private Metadata: The registry prioritizes organizational data (e.g., Registrant Organization, Registrar, Creation Date) rather than individual personal contact information.
• Redaction Compliance: Where registrars automatically redact personal contact details via privacy proxies, the project relies on secondary verification methods (such as official organizational filings or direct outreach) to confirm domain stewardship.

3. Registry Maintenance & Lifecycle

Digital infrastructure changes rapidly. To ensure the registry remains an accurate, high-fidelity reference tool, data is subject to periodic review:

• Annual Audit Cycle: Domain records are re-verified annually to capture renewals, registrar updates, or changes in administrative control.
• Discrepancy Resolution: If a registered domain lapses, changes ownership, or falls out of compliance with our inclusion criteria, the record is flagged for manual administrative review.

• The Cameron Alliance (April 6, 1998): The global clancameron.org (Clan Cameron Association) and its regional counterpart cameronnet.org (Clan Cameron Association North America) were registered simultaneously.
• The Fraser Split (January 30, 2004): clanfraseroflovat.org and the German branch clanfraser.de were locked down on the same day.

Unverifiable, Shared, and Social-Only Listings

The tail end of the dataset outlines a shift toward alternative hosting methods, domain management issues, or modern social media pivots rather than maintaining standalone (.org/.com) infrastructure:

• Shared Domains: Some entities share single web spaces. For instance, the MacDonell of Glengarry lineage is noted as utilizing a shared domain structure (glengarry.org).
• Academic/Institutional Hosting: The Clan Buchan Association bypassed public domain registrars entirely, opting instead to be hosted directly under an institutional umbrella at umass.edu (University of Massachusetts), leaving no standard Whois registration date.

Facebook launched February 4, 2004. The platform later expanded to other universities and was officially opened to the general public on September 26, 2006.
