G'day from a down-under relative! I've only recently began researching my family history and found out that my great great great grandfather (I think that's the right no. of greats!), merchant Robert Campbell came to Australia in 1846. To my surprise I discovered that he played quite a big role in the founding of the nation's capital (Canberra) and also was involved in shipping goods to this country (from India I think). He has been described as a merchant, pastoralist, politician and philanthropist. I am currently planning a visit to Scotland, and thus am speeding up my research so that I know where to visit. All I know of his Scottish connections is that he was the youngest surviving son of 10 born to John Campbell (Laird of Ashfield, writer to the signet and town clerk of Greenock) and Agnes (nee Paterson). I also know that he named his property in Canberra, Australia "Duntroon" after his families Scottish seat. I hope that I haven't bored anyone with my rambling, and that maybe, caught somewhere in this gigantic WEB is someone who may be able to email me with some helpful info. Thanks J. Que

My mother is a Campbell. My great-grandfather came from Scottland. The family story goes that he had a great argument with his father and left Scottland. I would like to follow up on this story and make connections with any relations that I can identify in Scottland. Does anybody know of a father/son falling out in the mid to late 1800's that resulted in a son moving to New Orleans or Algiers Louisiana? I don't have his name but I should be able to get his name after the first of the year.

Here is what I know about my Campbells:
FAMILY RECORD OF WILLIAM CAMPBELL AND JENNIE FERGUSON
Married, lived between Cootehill and Belturbet, County Cavan, Ireland.
In 1848, they came to Cartwright Township, Durham County, Ontario.
Their family was born and reared in Ireland.
1. James, 2. Joshua, 3. Jane, 4.**Margaret, 5. William, 6. Eliza, 7.
Samuel, and 8. John. Three of whom came to Canada before their parents.
Samuel, the first of the family to cross the ocean, came to Canada in 1844.
He worked at shoe-making with his cousin, James Ferguson until 1850. (more
later)
William, Jr. married Eliza Madill in Ireland and had at least two children
before arriving in Cartwright Township in 1846. William was the first of
the family to follow Samuel to Canada. He lived there the rest of his life
and was buried near Blackstock. He had two daughters and 3 sons. Ann,
Jane, Samuel, James and Joseph.
Eliza married Robert Johnson in Ireland, came to Cartwright Township,
Durham County in 1847. Later moved to Mariposa Township, Victoria County
and from there to Euphrasia Township, Grey County, where she died.
John came to Canada with his parents in 1848. In 1850 he secured land in
Mariposa Township, Victoria County and married Sarah Foster who died in
1866 leaving a family of five: William, John J. Jennie, Annie, and Maggie.
John then married Jane Hodgins. John was the youngest of his family.
James, a bachelor, weaver, came to Canada with his parents in 1848.
In 1850, Samuel secured land in Mariposa Township and made a home for his
Mother who was widowed soon after coming to Canada. He also took in his
bachelor brother, James.
In 1856, Samuel married Margaret Ann Graham. In 1870, he, his wife and
family moved to Fenelon Township where he died in 1898, age 85 years. His
children were: William John, Louisa, Charlotte, Agnes, Margaret, Ida,
Jennie.
Jane and her husband, George Allen, a harness maker, came to Canada for a
short while then went to Scranton, Iowa, USA. Jane died in 1866 from
chloroform while undergoing an operation, leaving her husband and three
sons.
Joshua and his wife lived and died in Ireland and were childless.
Margaret married in Ireland a Mr. Ludlow who died leaving her with two
daughters, Margaret Jane and **Eliza. Later she married Mr. Symons who
died leaving two daughters, Mary Ann, and Prudentia. Margaret and her four
daughters followed her relatives to Canada in 1849, where she married
Thomas West of Cartwright Township. Margaret died in 1851 or 1852 and was
buried near Blackstock, Ontario.
Do we connect?

Also, about 10 years ago, a publication of the Campbell's in VA was distributed at a family reunion. I am interested in knowing if anyone has an extra copy which I could buy.

My grandfather always claimed our heritage was Welsh. It
wasn't until after his death that we found out from his
sister that we were of Scottish heritage. We recently
attended a Celtic Festival and Highland Games in Richmond.
While at the festival I attempted to find out the background
of my family. We were directed to the tent of the Campbell
Clan where I was informed that the Ure family was a part of
the MacIver Clan but came under the Campbell Clan. I am
interested in finding out more of my heritage. My mother
has some papers of indenture that is supposed to have
belonged to one of my ancestors. My dad got the papers from
his aunt just prior to his death. These papers show that my
ancestor was indentured to a surgeon and that his father was
Comptroller of the Custom (?) for Glasgow. Can anyone
verify that the Ure family is part of the MacIver Clan?
