It is interesting that I recently discovered that an ancestor was called Margaret MacDiarmid, born 1807 in Scotland. I discovered this information this year. But I had visited Inverary (sp?) Castle in 1996 when we were travelling with a tour guide from Donaldson's College in Edinburgh. We took a tour of the Scottish Highlands! Little did I know that my ancestor's family or clan lived in that castle centuries ago!

One of my prized possessions is a 17th century ancestral portrait of Lady Mary Campbell attributed to Sir Peter Lely. I have just started to try to find out information about her. Painted on the canvas is the following "Lady Mary Campbell Daughter of Archibald Marquis of Argyll Countess Dowager of Caithness Married in 1681 to John Erard (or Erand?) of Breadalbane". Her father, Archibald Campbell, was the 1st Duke of Argyll, and there is information available on him in our local library. His biography names his two sons and gives information on them, but doesn't even name his four daughters. I am a total beginner at this type of research. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Below is a letter my wife and I sent to our local newspaper which explains an unhappy event here in Brady, Texas. A young Texan of Scottish lineage was refused entry to his High School Prom wearing a formal kilt. He was sent home to change from a kilt to blue jeans. Those of us here in Brady who claim Scotland as our ancestral home were outraged that such a thing could happen. We hope other folks from around the world who claim the same heritage would stand with us in petitioning the local school system to change their policies. First the letter: Letters to the Editor The Brady Standard-Herald Box 1151 Brady, Texas 76825 Dear Editor, We were saddened to learn that Trenton Merren was refused entry to his Brady High School prom because he was wearing a formal Scottish kilt. It was not a costume but a hand made kilt costing over $150 to rent and worth a thousand dollars. It was perhaps the most elegant male outfit at the prom. Apparently there is a school rule restricting the wearing of the kilt at school proms. As persons of Scottish and Irish heritage we are appalled that such a rule would even exist. Scotsmen struggled for centuries to make the wearing of the kilt acceptable and for the last two hundred years it has been appropriate dress at any formal occasion in the English speaking world. The Kings of England frequently wear the kilt (the Stewart plaid) at official events of state. It is particularly disturbing that such heavy handed action was taken against this young man. He is a leader in his church, an Eagle Scout, a Gold Award winner in 4H, and a member of the National Honor Society. He is actively involved in virtually every laudable activity in his community from the Brady High School Band to the Relay for Life. We hope the school system will not only reconsider this rule but will look more favorably at appropriate expressions of ethnic pride. We are a people made up of many different nationalities and it is a strength not a weakness. For that reason many schools welcome formal ethnic dress at special events. We need to celebrate our differences not cower in fear of them. How else can we teach our young people tolerance and appreciation of others? Sincerely Dr. John and Nonie Stewart 2109 S. High St. Brady, Texas 76825 597-0396 We encourage anyone who is concerned as we to send e-mail or preferably mail to the local newspaper and School Superintendent. If possible please send copies to me so that I can know what response is coming in. The school Superintendent (big boss, head master, the fellow in charge) is: Max Gordon Brady Independent School System 100 W. Main Brady, Texas 76825 USA phone 915-597-2301 email: bisdadm1@centex.net The local newspaper is The Brady Standard Herald P.O. Box 1151 Brady, Texas 76825 USA bsh@centex.net My email address is: john_s@centex.net Your help will be greatly appreciated. Let us stop this nonsense now!
